Giovanni Battista Belzoni:
ovvero un gran viaggiatore
Il 5 novembre del 1778 in un quartiere popolare di Padova, venne appeso un fiocco azzurro per annunciare la nascita di un pargoletto: vi si leggeva ricamato il nome “Giovanni Battista”. Ben presto il pargoletto cominciò a lavorare come barbiere col padre che per intrattenere i clienti, metteva a disposizione testi e riviste; così anche nel tempo libero Belzoni cominciò a leggere e a sognare di poter visitare alcuni di quei posti affascinanti.
A 13 anni dunque, decise di scappare con il fratellino Francesco: la sua meta era Roma dove pensava di scoprire l’antica cultura di questa città.
Visitò Ferrara, poi Bologna ma verso la strada per Firenze fu costretto a tornare indietro a causa della nostalgia provata dal piccolo Francesco.
Tornò quindi ma con l’intenzione di ritentare l’avventura.
Infatti, riorganizzò a 16 anni il viaggio a Roma; anche qui lavorò come barbiere e nel tempo libero si dedicò ad approfondire le proprie conoscenze su Roma antica visitando catacombe, monumenti e scavi archeologici. Soddisfatte le sue curiosità, tornò a Padova che era comunque per lui una città “troppo stretta”. Partì poi per l’Olanda per conoscere nuove civiltà e per migliorare le sue condizioni economiche; divenne commerciante e socio in affari con un altro fratello.
Decise, poi, di partire per l’Inghilterra; abbandonò il mondo del commercio e lavorò in quello dello spettacolo, prima nel teatro poi, essendo alto e robusto, lavorò come pagliaccio in fiera e successivamente come presentatore. Conobbe inoltre l’amore, infatti si sposò con un’inglese Sarah. Il matrimonio non riuscì in ogni modo a fermare, la sua sete di avventure e di viaggi. Perciò continuò i suoi spostamenti andando in Portogallo ma, complice la guerra, si trovò in Egitto: era il 1815.
Qui conobbe il Drovetti, soldato napoleonico e console francese a Il Cairo, egli lo presentò a Mohammed-Alì che gli chiese di progettare una pompa idraulica per irrigare i campi. Il loro progetto non ebbe molto successo poiché toglieva lavoro a molti uomini e pertanto non venne realizzato.
Giovanni Battista cominciò allora ad interessarsi all’archeologia del posto; partì con la sua famiglia con l’intento di visitare i siti archeologici egizi. Il 22 giugno arrivarono a Tebe dove ritrovarono il busto all’entrata del tempio funerario chiamato Memnonium, dedicato a Ramsete II: il busto rappresentava un giovane, giudicato da Hamilton il pezzo di scultura egiziana più bello e perfetto.
Belzoni riuscì, dimostrando impegno e capacità non indifferenti, il 12 agosto, a trasportare il busto, attraverso il Nilo, fino in Inghilterra
Un anno dopo ritornò a Tebe per raccogliere reperti archeologici e il 2 marzo 1818 entrò perfino nella piramide di Chefren!!!
La nostalgia della sua città natale cominciò a rattristarlo per cui decise, l’anno successivo, di ritornare a Padova. Non ci ritornò comunque a mani vuote, infatti donò alla città due statue di basalto nero, provenienti da Tebe, che rappresentavano una divinità con il corpo di donna ed il volto di leone (attualmente si possono vedere al museo cittadino degli Eremitani di Padova).Le due statue rappresentano la stessa dea: Sekhmet, dea della guerra, molto temuta, che proteggeva il faraone in periodo di guerra.
Nel 1820, Belzoni, scrisse un libro sulla propria vita, per farsi conoscere in tutta Europa.
Partì successivamente con l’intenzione di risalire fino alle sorgenti ancora sconosciute del Niger, con Sarah che però si fermò a Fez.
Nel giugno del 1823 raggiunse la catena dell’Atlante, lì conobbe un mercante inglese ma si ammalò gravemente; chiese di poter spedire i propri averi e di venderli per avere i soldi per poter tornare a casa.
Intraprese poi il suo ultimo viaggio ma il giorno dopo la partenza morì: era il 3 dicembre 1823

The 5 November of 1778 in a popular district in Padua, a blue bow was hung for announcing the birth of a newborn: it read you embroidered the name "Giovanni Battista". Well soon the newborn started to work as barber with his father that to entertain the clients, made texts available and magazines; so also in the leisure time Belzoni started to read and to dream to be able to visit some of that fascinating places.
To 13 therefore, definite to escape with his little brother Francesco: their destination was Rome where he thought about discovering the ancient culture of this city.
It visited Ferrara, then Bologna but toward the road for Florence it was forced to return back because of the nostalgia tried by the small Francesco.
He returned therefore but with the intention to retry the adventure.
In fact, he reorganized to 16 the trip to Rome; here he worked also as barber and in the leisure time it devoted him to deepen his own knowledges on ancient Rome visiting catacombs, monuments and archaeological excavations. Satisfied his curiosities, He returned in Padua that was for him a city however "too hold". He Departed then for Holland to know new civilizations and to improve his economic conditions; it became dealer and partner in business with another brother.
Definite, then, to depart for England; it abandoned the world of the commerce and he worked in that some show, first in the theater then, being tall and strong, he worked as clown in fair and subsequently as presenter. He knew besides the love, in fact he married him an English Sarah. The marriage didn't succeed in every way in stopping, its thirst of adventures and trips. Therefore it continued his moves going to Portugal but, accomplice the war, was found in Egypt: it was 1815.
Here it knew the Drovetti, Napoleonic soldier and French consul to The Cairo, he introduced him to Mohammed-Alì that he asked him to plan a hydraulic pomp to irrigate the fields. Their project was not successful since it removed job from many men and therefore it was not realized.
Giovanni Battista started then to interest himself in the archaeology of the place; it departed with his family with the intent to visit the sites archaeological Egyptians. On June 22 they reached Tebe where they found again the bust to the entrance of the called funeral temple Memnonium, devoted to Ramsete II: the bust represented a youth, judged by Hamilton the more beautiful and perfect piece of Egyptian sculpture.

Belzoni succeeded, showing appointment and not indifferent ability, on August 12, to transport the bust, through the Nile, thin in England.
Later one year returned to Tebe to pick up archaeological finds and March 2 nd 1818 entered even the pyramid of Chefren!!!
The homesickness of his city native started to sadden him for which definite, the following year, to return to Padua. He didn't return us to empty hands however, in fact it gave two statues of black basalt to the city, coming from Tebe, that represented a divinity with the body of woman and the face of lion (currently you can be seen to the city museum of the Eremitanis in Padua). Her two statues represent the same goddess: Sekhmet, goddess of the war, very feared, that protected the faraone in period of war.
In 1820, Belzoni, wrote a book on his own life, to make to be known in Europe.
It subsequently departed with the intention to go up again up to the sources still ignored of the Niger, with Sarah that however it stopped him to Fez.
In June of 1823 it reached the chain of the atlas, there it knew a merchant English but he seriously got sick; churches to be able to send his/her own possessions and to sell them to have the money to be able to return home.
Undertaken then his last trip but the day after the departure it died: it was December 3 rd 1823.
