JAMES JOYCE: (1882-1941)

Life:
From Dublin, from a well-to-do family whose situation deteriorated partly as a result of the decline in fortune econ.
Influence: betrayal, temporary nature of fame ... antiheroes as protagonists & rejection of stifling (soffocante)
atmosphere of Dublin.

Works:
Difficults in 10 years abroad: TS, Rome.
He wrote Dubliners, short stories.
Financial & health problems.
1919: starts to published Ulysses, but was found obscene.

J. & traditions:
Admired aestheticism...interest in form.
Litterature: means to promote awareness(consapevolezza), but art should be indepe. of other disciplines & moral aim

Role of Artist:
His task: neither to teach nor to convince, but to make people aware of reality, through their own subjective perception
Form he sought(cerca) was one making a literary work as impersonal as possible.
Separate elements of the picture that would enable the reader to reach their own conclusions

Form:
His works carried no messages from himself: he adopted different points of view, narrative techniques, linguistic
styles appropriate to different characters & situations.
3° person-narrator, stream of consciousness
Fragmented, multifaced nature of reality, subject dimension of experience.
Cubism

Language:
Linguistic resourcefulness(intraprendenza): render in writing the rhythm, tone, of a large variety of speaking voices

Theme:
Youth, adolescence, adulthood, maturity. How identity is affected by these stages of life.
All books have an autobiographical dimension.

Eveline:
Frustrated young woman, facing the 1° challenge of adulthood.
She dreams of escaping from her drab(monotona) life , but at the crucial moment she is powerless to act.
Narrator rarely disappear, story is a form of 3°person-narrator which proceed entirely from Eveline’s point of view,
mostly from inside her mind.
Language: plain vocabulary & simple syntax of the character.
Lower social classes. Piccola parte di vita che rappresenta la vita.
immagini: polvere (staticità) e mare (movement, freedom..)
Disegno di Dublino: incapacità di cambiare, incomunicabilità

Ulysses:
Parallelism with the odyssey: the journey. Viaggio nel tempo soggettivo (esperienze personali)
Variety of style, different points of view.
From 3°person narration to interior monologue.
Events of a single day. Physical 6 psycological wanderings of the 3 main characters.
Realistic, symbolic..title for interpretation.
Imposes an ancient myth upon contemporary experience. Myths to arrange the fragments of experience.
