Preromanticism 1750-1798
It’s not a movement: it’s a phenomenon.
It is the beginning of the crisis of Illuminism.
It’s the bringing forward Romanticism

- the gothic novel: unconscious fears, supernatural elements, mysteries (Walpole);

Romanticism 1800-1837
The first romantic writer was Jean Jack Rousseau.
It is the triumph of passions.
It’s the answer to Illuminism.
It’s characterized by a new conception of man and of the world.
The raison is the ruin of Man.
It’s based on everything is irrational and against raison.

The Victorian age 1837-1890
It’s characterized by the respect of morale.
It’s the triumph of appearances.
It’s characterized by the repression of natural instincts.
It causes a violent society (World War I)

Realism 1840-
The objective representation of reality.
The first realist is Flaubert (Madame Bovary).
The writers don’t show themselves in the books.
In France it’s known as Naturalism and in Italy as Verism.
Naturalism and Verism are about the poor society.
Realism is about the middle classes.

Dialects, dialogs.
Defects
Too much arid books.

Symbolism 1860-
It’s the description of reality with symbols.
It’s an image of an existential condition.
It’s a reaction against realism.
It’s known also as decadentism and dadaism.
Recurrent elements
musicality of verses; analogies, metaphors.
Characters
The words have to causes emotions in the readers.
Defects
It becomes aestheticism: the search for big symbols.
