A Very Special Dog
by Linda Stoddard
It was very, very late at night
As I sat reading near the light.
My dog's beside me on the floor;
Now and then snuffling a mighty snore.

I finished my book and muffled a yawn.
Good heavens, I've read till almost dawn!
All of a sudden my dog stood up,
Came over and picked up my coffee cup.

He carried it out to the kitchen sink,
Filled it with water and took a drink.
I thought to myself: 'There's something wrong,"
When he turned around and burst into song!

I really can't cope with a singing dog;
He sounds a lot like he's calling a hog!
A squeaky gate wouldn't sound much worse;
Oh, no!, he's started a second verse!

His singing is driving me quite insane;
Good gravy, now he's picked up a cane.
He's twirling it 'round and starting to prance;
Do you s'pose that animal's trying to dance?

I shook my head and rubbed my eyes;
Wiggled my toes and pinched my thighs.
I was just about ready to make a fuss
When he picked up a cloth and began to dust.

He finished the dusting and picked up a broom,
Carefully sweeping from room to room.
He polished the silver, and then the brass,
And hurried outside to mow the grass.

Now he's back inside and doing the laundry.
This is all so strange, I'm in quite a quandary!
The laundry's all done, it's in the dryer;
Wouldn't you think he'd be starting to tire?

Oh, mercy, the creature's singing again!
It sounds just like a squawking hen!
I don't think I can stand another note;
I'd rather listen to a Billy goat!

He washed and dried the dirty dishes;
Then baked a cake that's quite delicious.
The house is looking spic and span--
He's even cleaned the ceiling fan!

He raced up the stairs as quick as a wink
And scrubbed the bathroom, including the sink.
He shook out the rug at the top of the stairs,
And straightened my picture of teddy bears.

He galloped back down as fast as a flash;
I was really afraid the creature would crash.
"Forgive me," he sobbed with tears on his snout;
"I forgot I should take the garbage out!"

He made the beds and watered the plants;
Shortened and ironed my purple pants.
Now he wasn't raised to be a maid. . .
He better not think he's getting paid!

I sat up straight and thought I'd been dreaming,
But he's here beside me just smiling and beaming.
He said to me with his goofy grin,
"The cleaning's all done, 'tis neat as a pin."

I said, "Come here, you're getting a hug,
Even though you broke my very best mug.
Hold up your nose, you deserve a kiss;
I can't believe you've done all this!"

He said, "I ache, and my paws are sore,
but I've got enough pep for something more.
Grab your coat, let's get outside
I've worked so hard, I'd like a ride!"

We rode around town for hours and hours
Looking at cats and birds and flowers.
My dog's asleep with his chin on my knee,
What a wonderful creature, don't you agree?
