JAMES JOYCE was born in Dublin in 1882, into a Catholic lower-middle class family. He was the eldest of ten children. For a time the family was fairly prosperous but gradually lost their properties, until the family collapsed into poverty. On consideration of his potential Joyce was sent to prestigious schools run by the Jesuits. He received an excellent education. The atmosphere of these experiences is rendered in A Portrait of the Artists as a Young Man. He was a devout Catholic and for a time seemed to be inclined to priesthood. But after a period of spiritual doubt he transferred his vocation to the sphere of artistic achievement. He continued his studies at University College in Dublin and he specialized in modern languages. He began to write literary articles. The possession of a fine tenor voice and a strong musical talent encouraged him towards the musical profession but after he decided to pursue medical studies. He went to Paris with the intention of studying medicine and supporting himself by teaching English, but he was called back to Dublin because his mother was dying. But he refused to kneel at her bedside. He remained in Ireland for a year after his mother’s death, during which period he wrote book reviews, a collection of poems, some short stories and an autobiographical novel. He also left the family home. The 16th June 1904 Joyce met Nora Barnacle and he knew that he was in love with her. They left for the Continent, where he was to spend the rest of his life as a wonderer. After some job he found a position as a teacher at the Berlitz school in Trieste. These years were marked by poverty. He had two children: Giorgio and Lucia Anna. He met Italo Svevo. He published Chamber Music, Dubliners and The Dead. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man appeared in serial form in a London journal and after this was published in book. He published Exiles and Ulysses began to appear serially in New York. Joyce influential writers like Ezra Pound and Eliot. Ulysses made Joyce internationally famous, however, the book was banned as obscene in England and in America. He published his magnum opus Finnegans Wake. Joyce moved from Zurich where he died in 1941.

ULYSSES (James Joyce)
Joyce started Ulysses in 1914 and the episodes of it began to appear serially in New York. The work was completed in 1921 and published in 1922. The absolute realism used by Joyce to describe every thought that passed through the minds of his characters caused the novel to be banned as obscene. Joyce had always been fascinated by the myth of Ulysses, and chose to represent him in the person of Leopold Bloom.
Ulysses is a novel dealing with a day, 16 June 1904 the day when Joyce met Nora Barnacle and he knew that he was in love with her. The main character is Leopold Bloom, a Jew who lives in Catholic Dublin. He is a simple man who suffers from separation from his wife. The novel consists of 3 books and 18 episodes, each of which is modelled on a section of Homer’s Odyssey and covers an hour of Bloomsday. The parallel extends to the three main characters: Leopold Bloom is Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus (the hero of A Portrait) is Telemachus, and Leopold’s wife, Molly is Penelope. The first book, containing three episodes, concentrates on Stephen Dedalus, in the same way as the Odyssey begins with Telemachus who goes in search of his father, even if Stephen wasn’t Leopold’s son while Telemachus was Ulysses’ son. The second contains twelve episodes and deals with the wanderings of Leopold Bloom, as the Odyssey deals with the wanderings of Ulysses. The third book consists of three episodes and, like the Odyssey, brings the main characters Stephen and Bloom, to Bloom’s home where Molly is already in bed.
The novel was concluded by Molly’s monologue; she was in bed in the early hours while her memories and thoughts flow free as they pass through her mind, without a chronological order. It consists of sixty pages of uninterrupted prose with no punctuation in which past, present and future are alternate.
