Testo

INGLESE - T. Gray

Elegy begins in a country churchyard, where the author describes what's happening around him.
It's the end of the day, and the ploughman's herd, with their owner, go back to home, while the night is falling, making the author surrounded by darkness. The tomb of the forefathers makes remember to him the hardness of the past. These images, rich in symbolical element (owl, beetle, the breeze, the darkness).
All this leads Gray to meditate on death.
The autors talk about poor people and fate; doing this, he realises that poorness may also prevent people from committing bad actions.
The poem ends with the immaginary death of the autor. Some notes intrude themes like trasience, obscurity and fame: these elements may be read as a summin'up of Gray's life and beliefs.
