Testo

During the Renaissance the life in Spain became luxurios and corrupt, but the spanish power continued to grow. This atmosphere of wealth affected in remarkable manner the culture.

It was created a new literary form, typical of the Spain: the romance, a form of popular poetry, that it wasn’t for the noble courts, but destined to the lower classes.
The most important period was in XVI century, when the spanish preponderance became ever more important in the world, with discoveries and explorations of new lands. It was the “classic” period of the spanish literature and art; there were many literary productions.
Many authors all over the world were inspired by this literary genre.
The most important are:
--the Poetry
--the mystic literature
--the picaresque novel
Although there were much wealth and ostentation at imperial courts, the common people remained poor and exploited.
The spirit of adventure and the sense of rebellion against the prepotence of the Aristocracy are the main characteristics of the picaresque style. The Picaro is the main character of the novel; he’s bold, patient, violent and generous, sceptic and enthusiast. He’s conscious of his destiny, and he lives own hard and adventurous life. His laugh, often vulgar, is always bitter, and it contrasts with the laugh of kings.
The most important writers of this genre are: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra with Don Chisciotte, and three exponent of the spanish theatre of the XVII century: Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina e Calderon de la Barca.
There are many differences between the spanish and the english picaresque novel:
I think in England the picaresque novel had characteristics more quiet, and it wasn’t so critical against the aristocracy. The novels were prevalently comical and ironical.
