Transport is an essential element in sales transactions as it gets the goods to the final consumer. Fast, safe and efficient transport systems have greatly contributed to the growth of trade. Over the last thirty years, there have been many important changes related to transporting goods. Perhaps, the most important modification has been the introduction of standardised packing units, such as the container. This has enabled more integration between modes of transport (intermodal transport), such as train, ship, aeroplanes and trucks. As a result, transport time and cost have been reduced. Many factor need to be considerer before choosing an appropriate means of transport. The most important are: type of goods, size, quality, urgency, distance and cost.
In the transports by land, you can find road transport (that is the most important form of land transport. Its great advantage is flexibility), railways (that are much less important than in the past, but they are currently used to transport dangerous items and bulk freight over long distance) and pipelines (that are an important and recent method of transport. They are used for transporting oil, gas and petrol-chemical).
