TRAGEDY
Comes from the Greek and it is a story with an unhappy ending, involving the death of at least one of the protagonists. Classical tragedy followed a unified structure. It was preceded by a prologue and included a chorus that commented the events and characters.
The meaning of tragedy for:
Aristotle: he saw tragedy as a representation of universal truths. He thought it had an effect of purification: audience would be purified watching tragedy. We can compare the utility of tragedy with the effects of soap operas have upon us. We feel like the characters: soap operas have a cathartic effect.
Plato: ha saw tragedy like violent and irrational emotions. We can compare what he thought about it with the watching violence on TV that produces more violence in reality.
Nietzsche: he thought that tragedy represented the conflict between the individual and society. The tragic hero, who is typically a solitary figure in conflict with society, prefers soliloquy as a form of expression.
Tragedy deals with fundamental human situation and emotions. The idea of a plan that goes wrong is an element very common in tragic drama.
