How to travel:
Public transport is not as extensive as in most European countries. Americans tend to use their own cars much more. There are two bus companies which run services across the whole country and they offer unlimited travel tickets which are excellent value. Train services are not so numerous and do not cover such a wide area.
If you want to travel quickly flying is the best way. Plane tickets are much cheaper than in Europe. A good way to see the country is by hiring a car. The roads are excellent and petrol is very cheap.
Where to stay:
In motels outside the cities (city centre hotels are often either very expensive or very poor quality). You can go camping or hire a caravan or even a recreational vehicle.
There are camping sites in the national parks. American families often send their children to camps in the summer. You could finance your trip by finding a job in one of those camps, looking after the children.
Many universities rent rooms from their student accommodation during the summer vacation.
Where to eat:
You can find good quality food in supermarkets and other stores. In the cities some shops are open 24 hours a day and also on Sundays.
For quick cheap meals there are fast-food restaurants and takeaways. If you want something with a little more individual character try the smaller sandwich shops or delis, where office workers go during the lunch break.
