The Theatre
Playhouses were built towards the end of the
16th century. They were built in London and had
to be located outside the city walls because the
Puritan authorities considered them to be centres
of corruption.
The Elizabeth playhouses was circular or polygo-
nal in shape; the stage consisted of a rectangular
platform, called platform stage.
Around the theatre walls there were three tiers of
galleries for yhe higher social classes.
The stage was surrounded by the audience on three
sides. On the fourth side there was a wall called
‘tiring house’,where the players changed.
Elizabeth plays used only a few properties and the
Setting was usually indicated in the characters’
speechs. The traditional division of shows was in
yo five acts. The public included people from the
lower classes to the nobility.
