THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY
1. An old man and two other young men are in a famous old house at the moment of tea. Old man, Mr Touchett is expecting his wife that was spending the winter in America. There she met a niece and she'll come back to England with her.
2. During that speech the niece Miss Archer arrived she was alone because Mrs Touchett was expecting his son, Ralf, in the hotel. Miss Archer was very kind and beautiful but no body had ever seen before.
3. Ralf went to his mother. He was a young, but suffered of tuberculosis: he had often to travel a lot looking for good climates for him, so he spent only few times with his mother. Suddenly he asked her something about Miss Archer: the mother answered that she wanted to give her the opportunity to visit four European country, but she has a strong will so she could be free of choose about his life and his marriage.
4. Miss Isabel Archer was a famous journalist and wrote and translated many books. She was very independent: she thought that a woman had to be able to live alone; and it was so for her. Mr Touchett wanted to help her because she served to her wife when she was young.
5. Isabel and Ralph spent many time together. A day she met the other young man, Lord Warburton Isabel was very interested in him, that was a nice example of gentleman. But Mr Tauchett advised her to not fall in love with him.
6. The day after an Isabel's friend, Miss Stackpole, arrived to London. She advised Isabel that Goodwood, a man who loved Isabel, was looking for her in London. In fact the day after he sent a letter to see her. So Lord Warburton decided to say to Isabel that he loved her and that he wanted to marry her, but Isabel refused, because she didn't want to marry.
7. Isabel and Lord Warburton saw themselves in a gallery. The Lord tried to change her choose, but it wasn't so. Isabel was going to leave to London, but she hoped to see him again.
8. Isabel, Miss Stackpole and Ralph went to London. But when Isabel was alone in the hotel, Goodwood met her, but she sent away him because she didn't want to marry. Than Mr Touchett was ill so they came back to the house, where Isabel met an old Mrs Touchett's friend, Madame Merle a very kind woman.
9. The condition of Mr Touchett was worse. One day he spoke with his son, Ralph, and they decided to share his money between Ralph and Isabel. Then he died.
10. After have read Mr Touchett's will, his wife was struck by the fact that he gave 10.000 pounds to his niece.
11. Madame Merle went to Florence with Isabel. They went in a house where lived a French man. Madame Merle wanted he to marry Isabel.
12. Madame Merle decided to *wake Isabel know a man, Gilbert Osmond. They went in his house and they met him with his sister and his daughter.
13. Mr Touchett wanted that Isabel could marry Gilbert Osmond, but she wasn't interested in marriage. Than they decided to go together to Rome.
14. Isabel decided to marry Gilbert Osmond, than Madame Marle went to Rome, where she wanted to help an her friend, Mr Edward Rosier, to marry the daughter of Gilbert Osmond, who didn't agree with this marriage. Lord Warburton arrived and told to Isabel and her husband that Ralph Touchett was very ill. So Isabel decided to go to see him. Even Lord Warburton wanted to marry Miss Osmond.
15. Madame Merle went to the house of Gilbert and Isabel order to say them that Mr Rosier wanted to marry their daughter, Pansy. But they didn't accept in fact Lord Warburton loved Pansy.
16. Isabel wanted her stepdaughter to marry Lord Warburton, and wanted to convince her husband too. But some days after, Lord Warburton had to return to London and Pansy understood she didn't care of him: the marriage is failed.
17. These months where unhappy for Isabel Madame Merle came back by a her voyage and met Gilbert who judged his wife severely. So Isabel could understood that her marriage was organised by Madame Merle, and that Gilbert had married her only for her money.
18. Some days after Pansy said to Isabel that she wanted to go in a convent for a period of calm and quiet. Isabel agreed. Then a telegram from England arrived: Ralph was dying, and she wanted to go there, but his husband didn't want. He met the countess Gemini who said her that Pansy was daughter of Gilbert and Madame Merle: they never married because she wasn't rich, but Gilbert married Isabel for her money and Madame Merle agree in order to gave these money to Pansy and daughter. Isabel felt back, but than she left the house to go to England.
19. When Isabel arrived Ralph was very ill in his bad. They remained alone. He considered her the angel of death, the most beautiful angel and he wanted Isabel to stay in England forever, without thinking to his unloved husband. After Ralph's death she stayed there for a long period but than she had to came back to London, her destiny was awaiting her.
