The pit and the pendulum
– A man has been condemned to death by Inquisition. So he has been taken in a dark room. Here he starts to know the condition of the room, so he walks very worried. Suddenly he falls, so he can notice that in the room there is a large pit, where he could fall and die. But he realized this situation and saves himself. But now he’s sure that the Inquisition will found another way to kill him. In fact he loses consciousness, and when he wake up, he is in a bed: upon his there is a pendulum made of iron that lift down to cause his dead. He remembered that in the room there was many rats goes near him to eat. So they eats even the cords that imprisoned him: he is free. Suddenly he realizes that something in the room was changing: he sees that the form of the prison was changing and that in the pit there is s fire in order to kill him. He loses every hope, but suddenly he listen to an human voice: French army had entered in Toledo and defeated Inquisition. Now he is really free and save.
– A man is considered mad, but he thinks it isn’t so because of his lucidity, his capacity to hear. He is obsessioned by the eye of an old man. For seven days he went at midnight in his house, making no noise. Then he saw his eyes with a ray of light, but they were closed. So he went away. The eight he went there but the old man wake, so he could see the eye that obsessioned him. He listen a terrible noise, perhaps the noise of the men’s heart: he decided to kill him. Then he put the death body under three planks of the floor of the room. Than two policeman come. He was very calm, so that they thouth he was innocent. He made them sit and started to speak. But he listened again the terrible noise of the old man’s heat. He became crazy and he thouth that the other man listened the noise too, and that the knew that he did. So he decided to admit everything.
– A man is going to describe something of incredible. At the beginning in fact he stresses his lock of imagination, so his story has to be truth. At the age of 18 years, because of a sort of nervous restlessness he sailed on a voyage to the Archipelago of the Sunda island. But a night there is a lot of wind. The sailors were not worried, but he can’t sleep. In fact at midnight a violent stormo caused the death of all passengers, except him and a Swede. The storm continued for five days. Then they realized their condition: they went to south, and now they were alone. Then they sow a great ship, the greatest they ever saw, but because of the strong wind, it crashes near them. In this ship there was a man, but he didn’t notice them. According to him he was a strange creature. He saw the ship, but even it, with its strange weed, impressioned him: that ship perhaps had something of supernatural and this was the reason of the fact that it was even now saved. But after some days a new, stronger, storm come, and the ship went down. He write all this story in a manuscript that put into the sea.
