THE ORIGINS
The preistoric inhabitans of England were the dark-haired Iberians, who settled the western and southern parts of Britain. These people biult STONHENGE,in south-west of England, the function of these stones is still a mystery:it has a religious and ritual function;as lawgiving and judging;as a truce-ground inter- tribal disputes, and perhaps even as some sort of annul market-place;there isn’t one function but there are a set of functions.another clue to the secret of Stonhenge lies in the tremendous extra effort involved in raising and mortaicing fast 7-ton lintels;this seems inconvertible of a determination to build for all time,to make sure the vertical stones will never lean or fall.
Around the 700 B.C. the Celts began to arrive from north-west Germany.Among the Celts there seemedto be equality between the sexes.
The Romans decided to invade Britain for two reasons:the British Celts were aiding the Celts of Gaul(Francia)against Rome;and because Britain was a very productive land.
JULIU CAESAR invaded Britain in 55 B.C.and ,but the romans conquered Britain in 43/47 A.D.,under emperor CLAUDIUS.They(romans)introduced treir civilitation:for ex the coloniae or the municipia, and the castra, the roads; and language:for ex the name Britain comes from Greco-roman.
Emperor HADRIAN order the building of a wall to mark the border between Britain(England)and Caledonia(Scotland). In 409 Emperor HONORIUS was obliged to withdraw(ritirarsi)his soldiers to defend Rome, and the empire began to collapse.
The principal danger for Britain are the invaders:the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. The Anglo-Saxon migrations gave the lager part of Britain its name:England. The influence of Anglo-Saxon culture is evident, for ex the name of the days of the week and in place names.
