The English Renaissance
The end of the war of the roses opened the road to Lon-
don for a new family, the Tudors.
Henry VII, the first Tudor, ascended the throne in 1485
These were Henry VII’s main achievements:
-he strengthened the power of the crown;
-he expanded the economy;
-he created a mercantile fleet;
-he suppressed rebellions in Ireland, Scotland and Corn-
wall. He died in 1509 and Henry VIII comes to the
throne. He was the idol of his subjects.
In 1534 he became the King of the Church in England
with the Act of Supremacy.
Few people dared raise their voices against the schism
and paid with his life. After his divorce, Henry VIII mar-
ried Anne Boleyn who gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth.
The King died in 1547 and his two successors are
Edward VI and Mary Tudor, but they died.
Elizabeth I became queen in 1558.
She was graceful, tall and intelligent.
She re-established Protestantism in the form of Angli-
Canism. In the field of foreign affairs Elizabeth made
England one of the most powrful nations in the world.
She died in 1603 and was called ‘Virgin Queen’.
Now the Suart ascened the throne and James I became
King. He was a serious and learned prince, who prac-
Tised the theory of absolute monarchy.
James’s attitude increased the hostility of Parliament
Towards the Monarchy.
James I died in 1625 and the throne passed to his son,
Charles I.
