The end of Anglo–Saxons England
When Alfred came to the throne, he won back the occupied territories. This king was a ruler of immense determination and courage; he enacted the first English laws, encouraged education and scholarship, and built a fleet. He translated various Latin works into Anglo–Saxon. The Anglo–Saxon king, Ethelred, decided to pay the Vikings sums of money to go away.
When Ethelred died, Canute, the leader of the Vikings, controlled much of England. In 1042 the royal council, the Witan, elected one of Ethelred’s son as king: Edward the confessor.
The last Anglo-Saxon king was Harold II. Wiliam, Duke of Normandy, claiming that his relative Edward had bequeathed him the English throne.
The Normans descended from the Vikings who had previously settled in Northern France.
They had soon begun to speak French and had become Christian but were still – well known for their fighting skills.
