Sonnet 115
Those lines that I before have writ do lie,
Even those that said I could not love you dearer.
Yet then my judgement knew no reason why
My most full flame should afterward burn clearer.
But reckoning Time, whose millioned accidents
Creep in 'twixt vows, and change decrees of kings,
Tan sacred beauty, blunt the sharp'st intents,
Divert strong minds to the course of altering things-
Alas, why, fearing of Time's tyranny,
Might I not then say, "Now I love you best,"
When I was certain o'er incertainty,
Crowning the present, doubting of the rest?
Love is a babe, then might I not say so,
To give full growth to that which still doth grow?

Mentono i versi che una volta ho scritto,
dissi:" Di più non ti potrei amare";
ma all'intelletto era allora incredibile
ch'io, sì colmo, avvampassi ancor più chiaro.
Guardando al tempo, che in vicende a mille
scongiunge i voti e muta legge ai re,
scurisce la beltà sacra, i più fini
stempra, i forti nel suo flusso traveste;
ah del tempo implacato nel timore
come non dirti: "Ora t'amo nel culmine"
quando l'incerto m'era certo e l'oggi
incoronavo, del futuro in dubbio?
E' un bimbo Amore, non dire dovevo,
lasciar pienezza a quel che ancora cresce.

chiesa di Stratford-upon-Avon. Nel 1582
si sposa con Anne Hathaway: l'anno successivo
nasce Susan, la prima figlia della coppia,
un anno dopo nascono due gemelli di cui uno
soltanto sopravviverà.
