Christmas in Britain
By tradition Christmas is a family event in Britain. The houses is decorated with holly and mistletoe and the Christmas tree is covered with coloured lights, glass baubles, tinsels and bows.
Children write a letters to Santa Claus and asking for their favourite toys; they also hang stocking at the end of their bed so that Santa Claus can fill them with sweets.
Children are also taken to watch “pantomimes” in theatres. Pantomimes are humourous musical play whit a fairly tale story and songs and dancing. Traditionally, a man plays the leading woman and the woman plays the leading man, and the public shouts and cheers and sings along with the songs.
On Christmas Eve groups of children sing Christmas carols in the street and collect money for charity.
On Christmas morning the family exchange presents, and child find toys under the Christmas tree. Then the family goes to church.
At midday they have the Christmas dinner, a rather large meal usually including roast turkey. The dessert is rather special: plum pudding, a rich fruit cake that is eaten with cream or custard.
In the afternoon they may watch the Queen on television while she gives a traditional Christmas message to people.
The day after Christmas, 26 December, is also a public holiday called Boxing Day: people give small presents ( in “boxes”) to a milkman, postman and others.
Natale in Gran Bretagna
Dalla tradizione il Natale è un evento familiare in Gran Bretagna. Le case sono decorate con agrifoglio e vischio e l'albero di Natale è coperto con luci colorate, palle di vetro, fili d'argento e fiocchi.
I bambini scrivono lettere a Babbo Natale e gli chiedono i loro giocattoli preferiti; loro appendono anche delle calze alla fine del letto così che Babbo Natale le possa riempire di caramelle.
Bambini sono presi anche a guardare le " pantomime " nei teatri. Le pantomime sono delle divertenti rappresentazioni musicali con dei graziosi racconti, canzoni e balli. Tradizionalmente, un uomo rappresenta la donna principale e la donna rappresenta l'uomo principale, ed il pubblico grida, applaude e canta insieme le canzoni.
Alla vigilia di Natale gruppi di bambini cantano gioiose canzoni natalizie nelle strada e raccolgono soldi per la carità.
La mattina di Natale la famiglia si scambia i regali, i bambini trovano i regali sotto l'albero di Natale. Poi la famiglia va a chiesa.
A mezzogiorno fanno il pranzo di Natale, un pasto piuttosto grande che di solito include tacchino arrosto. Il dolce è piuttosto speciale: plum pudding, una torta della frutta ricca che è mangiata con panna o crema.
Di pomeriggio guardano la Regina in televisione mentre dà il tradizionale messaggio natalizio alla popolazione.
Il giorno dopo Natale, il 26 dicembre, è anche una festa pubblica chiamata Boxing Day: la gente dà dei piccoli regali (in " scatole ") al lattaio, al postino ed ad altri.
