Testo

Dear Marie
First let me introduce myself. My name’s Bill Reynolds and I’m from London. I’m 21 years old and at the moment I’m still studying Modern Languages. I’m taking my final exams next month. After that I’ll have a few months free, so I’m going to look for a job to earn a bit of money.
I saw your advertisement in a magazine while I was waiting for a dental appointment. The expedition sounds very exciting and I’d really like to join the group. I love travelling and I’ve been to several countries in Europe and to the United States, too, but I’ve never been to Africa before.
If I was accepted to go on the trip I’m sure I would be a useful member of the group. I can speak three languages – English, French, and Spanish – and I like meeting other people. I can cook quite well and I can play the guitar, too. I passed my driving test a couple of years ago, but I’m afraid I don’t know very much about cars, so I wouldn’t be much help with repairing the car if it broke down.
I hope you will consider me for a place on the tour and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Bill Reynolds

Evidence

A woman has been murdered. Her body was discovered at seven o’ clock this morning. She had been stabbed. What happens next? In fiction, the crime would probably be solved by a brilliant detective. But in real life crimes aren0t usually solved like that. Most criminals are caught by scientists.
The police have been called, but the room isn’t touched until the experts arrive – the pathologist, the photographer, and the detective. Then the evidence is collected and the things are taken to the police laboratories. Here they will be examined by forensic scientists. The evidence will be used to find and try a suspect.

Values

Are you the kind of person that likes to help other people? Does the salary that you earn motivate you? The German psychologist, Eduard Spranger, suggested that there are six main types of people, aesthetic, social, religious, economic, political, and theoretical.
These types are based on the values that motivate people.
Conrad, for example, is the kind of person who thinks everything should be useful. His high-powered job as the sales director of a large international company is very important to him, and he thinks he deserves the high salary which he earns. He collects works of art, but he only buys things that have a commercial value.
Conrad sees himself as someone who knows what he wants. The clothes that he wears are stylish and the car that he drives is fast and expensive.

11. genuinely likes people
12. she gets from her involvement in politics

Selina is an artist. Some of the paintings that she has sold have fetched high prices, but Selina is not very interested in money. As long as she has enough for the things that she wants, she’s content.

Bjorn is fascinated by the laws that govern the universe. When he was a child he loved to study the starts with a telescope that he got for his birthday. Today he works in the science department of a university.

Clara is the kind of person that genuinely likes people. She’s always ready to help anyone that needs support or shoulder to cry on. Her job as a nurse gives her the opportunity to help people that are sick.

Katrin loves the feeling that she gets from her involvement in politics. She wants to change the things that she thinks are wrong with society. She has decided to stand in the local elections that take place next year.

Tamas is interested in the deeper meaning of life. The questions that concern him are: Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? The life that he leads is very simple and he meditates for at least two hours a day.
