Drama in the English Renaissance
During the reign of Henry VII Drama was still
Medieval. In 1548 the festival of Corpus Christi
was suppressed and Mysteries continued to be
performed on other religious festival.
During the of Elizabeth Drama flourished and
became amajor genre for English writers.
The new age exalted human nature in all its as-
pects, good and bad.
The popularity of Drama spread thanks to travel-
ling companies of actors. They were descendants
of the street performers of the early Middle Ages.
They kept the status of servants of their Lord and
called their companies of his name.
Their performances took place on movable plat-
forms in innyards or in town squares or in the
manor houses of nobles.
In these companies there aren’twoman because
the acting profession was considered immoral.
