MR AND MRS BENNET
In the extract from “Pride and Prejudice” we read, Jane Austen describes two important characters : Mr and Mrs Bennet. In this text they are described by description and dialogue. Their dialogue is a very strange one because of Mr Bennet’s behaviour. Infact he does not seem interested in his wife’s converstion: he does not listen carefully to Mrs Bennet’s words, he does not make questions to her and he says at her speeches: “You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it”. But Mrs Bennet is not irritated or dicouraged by her husband’s indifference. She starts speaking in a very enthusiastic way. Only in the final part of the text she begins to be irritated, when she talks about her poor nerves and Mr Bennet’s carelessness. However Mrs Bennet keeps speaking with enthusiasm because of the importance of the fact she’s talking about: a new neighbour, a young and single man of large fortune. She hopes he will marry one of her five daughters. As a matter of fact her only “business was to get her daughters married”. Mr Bennet does not share his wife’s enthusiasm. He is more serious than her and in his speeches we understand he is detached, witty and ironical. He is ironical especially when he answers to Mrs Bennet about her frial nerves: he knows her very well so he expresses his resignetion and also his affection to his wife’s behaviour. On the contrary Mrs Bennet is nervous, anxious in her repeting what Mr Bennet’s duty is (he must visit Mr Bingley) and she’s also stupid in her ignorance. So these two characters have nothing in common, they do not understand each other’s. Only Mr Bennet does. In spite of that when the events will

need it, they will work together to obtain their daughters’ happiness.
