History
Edward the Con fessor, the King of England was half norman and half Anglo-Saxon hepromised his throne to Duke William of Normandy. Edward sent Harold Godwinsson. Who was the son of one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon noblemen. The Earl of Wessex to swear allegiance to William. In 1066 when king Edward died, Harold took the crown of England with the support of the Anglo-Saxon arostocracy. When William of Normandy heard this he was very angry and he dcided to invade England. The Normans in the 1066 fought the Anglo-Saxon at Hastings. It was a long difficult battle. After Harold was killed when an arrow struck him in the eye. After this the Saxon were defeated, and after his victory William was called the conqueror he became king of England.

Art norman art: the Normans built forts and castles on hills, near rivers or roads, in order to control the land. The most famous castle was tha white tower in London today it is called the tower of London. Norman architects from France designed beautiful Romanesque churches and cathedrals in England. In this period the churche was very powerful. Norman castles were of massive proportions exhibiting their military spirit.

DURHAM CATHEDRAL: Which was built between the 11th and the 12th century, is the finest examples of the Romanesque style. It is an impressive but austere building. The interior is solemn and creates a deep seme of religious peace. The important elements of these style are:
• Structure massive and powerful
• Arches – Round
• Pillars – Thick
• Walls – Thick
• Voults – Cross with round arches
• Windows –Mmarrow
• Decorations – Simple
• FaFade – Simple with rose windows
• Interiors – Dark
The Gothic architecture (Gothic Cathedras were intended to be a monumental expression of the vision of God) we can divid 3th fases:
1. Early English Gothic – elegant and slender structure
pointed arches
tall pillars
walls are thinner
cross voults with pointed arches
SALISBURY CATHEDRAL: its graceful cathedral’s a perfect example of Early English architecture; built in the 1200ѕ in the Early English style, it has the tallest spire in England. Salisbury Cathedral in also famous for its medieval clock which is the oldest existing clock in England
2. Decorated English Gothic – long stained glass windows
YORK MINSTER: in this huge cathedral you can see examples of decorated style.
3. Perpendicular English Gothic – fanvaulting euriched with
carved wood decorations
-highly decorated Fahades with
sculputures, rose windows,
spires and pinnacles
-luminous interiors
KING’S COLLEGE CHAPEL at Cambridge is a typical example of Perpendicular Gothic, built in 1446-1515
WELLS: the cathedral in the Perpendicular style.

THE TOWER OF LONDON was begun by William the Conqueror around 1076; while the first Norman castles were made of earth and timber, this one was built in stone and its. Walls were white washed and this is how it got it’s name the it soon became an architectural symbol of norman military supremacy. White tower.
In canterbury cathedral you can see they were made of a mosaic of different coloured pleces of glass in a lead frame
