Sapere + infinito (significa riuscire in qualcosa, essere capaci di, e si usa con i verbi di percezione)

Sai sciare?
Can you ski?

Vedi la casa laggiù?
Can you see the house over there?

Can presente indicativo; congiuntivo presente

Egli non può venire.
He can’t/cannot come.

Penso che possa aiutarti.
I think he can help you.

Could imperfetto indicativo; congiuntivo passato;
condizionale presente e passato

Vedevi quei ragazzi?
Could you see those boys?

Non poteva venire.
He couldn’t come.

Se potesse verrebbe.
If he could he would come.

Ieri non ho potuto studiare.
Yesterday I couldn’t study.

NB: in frase affermativa in una situazione particolare del passato non posso usare “could”. Si deve usare:
• To be able (to)
• To manage (to)
• To succeed in + gerundio
Non sapevo nuotare, ma in quell’occasione riuscii a salvare un ragazzo.
I couldn’t swim, but on that occasion I was able to save a boy
managed to save
succeed in saving

to be able (to) futuro will be able to; participio passato been
able to; gerundio being able to; infinito

Non so se potrà venire.
I don’t know if he will be able to come.

Era potuto uscire.
He had been able to go out.

È appena potuto uscire.
He has just been able to go out.

Può leggere da un’ora.
He has been able to read for an hour.

Era uscito senza potermi parlare.
He had gone out without being able to speak to me.

È sicuro di poterti aiutare.
He is sure to be able to help you.

NB: Could + have + participio passato
Se avesse potuto mi avrebbe aiutato.
If he had been able to he would have helped me.

Sarebbe potuta partire.
She could have left.

Sarei potuta venire se tu mi avessi telefonato.
I would have been able to come if you had phoned me.

Due verbi che hanno tutti i tempi e significano “avere il permesso di..”
To be allowed (to)
To be permitted (to)
Non mi era stato permesso di uscire.
I hadn’t been allowed/permitted to go out.
May presente; esprime probabilità, possibilità. Traduce forse, può
darsi, chissà,…
Forse viene alle 2.
He may come at 2.

Might condizionale; esprime rimprovero.
Potresti studiare di più.
You might study harder.

Potresti farti il letto.
You might make your bed.
