ARTS AND CRAFTS
Ruskin and Morris were two critics of art.
They were influenced by the Gothic Revival and by the new ideas on the role of the artist.
The new artist demanded a popular art against the privileged elite.
For Morris and Ruskin architecture was foreign and the imposition of ruling-class taste on society.
They looked back to the Middle Age because they felt that the workers weren’t slaves to the machine.
Morris proclaimed that the architecture should be accessible to everybody.
The architects should attack the terrible inhuman environment created by the industrial revolution and should draw inspiration from the people’s own buildings.
For Morris they were truly English, appropriate to the climate and built of natural materials.
This marked the beginning of the modern architecture.
