Wordsworth
Lyrical Ballads
The Lyrical Ballads is a collection of poems published by Wordsworth and Coleridge, in which they stabled the principles and the ideals of romantic poetry. In his preface Wordsworth explained their intentions and aims.
Subject matter of poetry
Poetry should deal with incidents and situations from simple rustic life, transfigured by imagination.Reason:the preference for humble rustic life follows from the assumption that men are better when a lot of feelings co-exist in mind, they’re in contact with nature
Poetic diction
Poetry should use familiar, simple language, purified from its real defects, linear, connected with the everyday life.Reason:Such men hourly communicate with the best objects from which the best part of language is originally derived;and because, from their rank in society and the sameness and narrow circle of their intercourse, being less under the influence of social vanity they convey their feelings and notions in unelaborated expressions.
The poet’s identity
The poet is a man speaking to other men who has:acute awareness of physical sensations and a marked capacity for rejoicing in life;tenderness;enthusiasm;imagination;creativity;mankind.
The creative act of the poet
The creative process starts from an emotion which is recollected in tranquillity, because poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.
Biographia literaria
The primary imagination is the living power, prime agent of all human perception and as a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation in the infinite I AM. The secondary dissolves, diffuses, dissipates,in order to re-create;or where this process is rendered impossible,it struggles to idealize and to unify.Fancy is indeed no other than a mode of memory emancipated from the order of time and space and blended with, and modified by that empirical phenomenon of the will, which we express by the word choice.
Shelley
Shelley on poetry
Defence of poetry is Shelley’s reply to The Four Ages of Poetry of Peacock, that achieve that poetry was an obsolete art for the age of knowledge and reason.Shelley defends the value of poetry and achieve that poetry is the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds and it makes immortal all that is best and most beautiful in the world.
