COMMENT OF THE SOLILOQUY OF HAMLET
In this soliloquy Hamlet meditates on the idea of committing suicide. The hero is the son to the late and nephew to the present king. He is a man, who is become a kind of metaphor of the doubt and the indecision. He is a very strange character: he is a quiet man until when the ghost of his father asks him to revenge his death. Then he becomes very determined to reach his object. His personality is very enigmatic, because the young prince is torn between conflicting feelings and his mind is always agitated.
In this soliloquy he wants to commit a suicide not to suffer, because for him the life is only a series of “whips and scorns of time”.
In the first part he is undecided to kill himself or not, he doesn’t know if he wants to fight against the “troubles” or not. He would die to free himself from the “shocks that flesh is heir to”, but he is kept by the “dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil”. Then he explains all the spurns and he says that to die by a “bare bodkin” or going to the bourns of the undiscovered countries is better.
Eventually he concludes saying that the “conscience does make cowards of us all” and we “lose the name of action”.
The language of the soliloquy is very rich in images and metaphors. It is very refined and educated. It stirs up emotions in the audience to keep their attention. These features are typical of the tragedy.
