ISO – OSI Protocols
In 1984, in order to allow equipment from different suppliers to be networked, the ISO (International Standard Organization) proposed a strict set of rules (protocols) covering standards for physical connections, cabling, modes and speed of transmission, data formats, error detection and correction. This means that any pieces of equipment using the same communication protocol can be connected together.
Manufactures are gradually incorporating some of these standards into a number of their products, but it is unlikely that total standardisation will be achieved for some time, if ever. Where two devices have different protocols they can often still communicate via a “protocol conversion computer”.
The ISO – OSI seven layer model
OSI is an abbreviation for Open System Interconnection, and a model for OSI (implying that equipment from any manufacturer can be connected to any other manufacturer's equipment) has been under development since 1977. a hierarchy of seven layers has been identified, as described below.
Application, Presentation, Session and Transport layers (levels 7, 6, 5 and 4).
These layers pertain to Computer Science and deal with problems of different high-level software systems that communicate between each other. They will be analysed later.
The other levels are more specifically for electronics technicians and are:
Network layer (level 3): The function of this layer is to perform the routing of information around the network, connecting adjacent nodes in the network and also carrying out accounting functions to enable the network owner to charge users.
Data Link layer (level 2): The physical data transmission media used in a network are subjected to interference which can corrupt data, this Data Linker handles any data transmission errors. The techniques used for receipt and acknowledgement of data by a receiver are handled in this layer.
Physical layer (level 1): This layer is concerned with standard for the mechanical, electrical and procedural aspects of interface devices: for example, the number of pins a network connector should have. It is concerned with how binary data is transmitted along the communication channel.
• Glossary •
supplier: a person who provides what is needed or wanted
unlikely: improbable
to achieve: to attain a goal
accounting: the system of recording and summarising business and financial transactions
receipt: a quantity or amount received

Protocolli ISO – OSI
Summary
In 1984, the ISO (International Standards Organization) proposed a series of protocols to make standards for physical connections, cabling, modes and speed of transmission, data format, error detection and correction.
Producers are gradually incorporating some if these standards into a number of their products. If two devices have different protocols they can communicate via a “protocol conversion computer”.
OSI (Open System Interconnection) has developed a hierarchy of seven layers.
Application, Presentation, Session and Transport layers (levels 7, 6, 5 and 4). These layers pertain to Computer Science and represent the layers used by software systems. The function of the network layer is perform the routing of information around the network, it allows to communicate computer that are no adjacent nodes and it provides accounting functions. Data Linker layer involves any data transmission errors by using a checksum called CFS to locate errors in data.
Physical layer allows to transmit data along the communication channel.
